Massage Aching Muscles? Sure… But What About Your Lymphs?

Lymphatic drainage massage can promote toxin elimination, healthier skin

Who doesn’t love a good massage?

Massages are revitalizing, healthy and soothing as well. A good massage can wake up tired muscles, as well as stretch and tighten those sleepy ligaments and tendons.

Massages can even help remove waste and toxins from the body’s tissues.

A less familiar type of massage – the lymphatic drainage massage – is such a massage. Think of the lymphatic system – which runs through the body – as a body’s drainage structure. The fluid in the lymphatic system helps remove waste and toxins from bodily tissues.

Unlike the more commonly known massages that use a strong touch and kneading movements, the drainage massage is a form of gentle massage. It uses light repetitive strokes that encourage movement of lymph fluids around the face and body.

Because the lymphatic system depends on smooth muscle movement, the light repetitive stroke provided by a lymphatic drainage massage helps transport the waste and toxins in its fluids through lymph vessels.

As with any massage, follow up with rest and hydrating with water are recommended.

A Decade’s Old Technique

The lymphatic drainage technique was developed in France during the 1930s by Emil and Estrid Vodder, a husband and wife team. It rapidly became a recommended treatment in the medical community for lymphedema resulting from cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation.

Over time, the drainage technique became a remedy to treat several health issues other than the side effects of cancer treatment and additional forms of lymphedema. Among the issues were – and still are – fibromyalgia, fatigue, insomnia, stress, digestive problems, arthritis, and migraine episodes, with many sufferers reporting relief.

Old Method for a New Age

Today, however – because of the method’s detoxification and esthetic benefits – the lymphatic drainage technique is being used by skin care specialists, like professional, licensed, certified Aestheticians who are specially trained in the method.

Here at Changes Spa & Aesthetics, we are trained in lymphatic drainage massage and offer the technique in body massage, as well as facials.

Importantly, lymphatic drainage techniques are incorporated into our facials as needed to help with skin clarity, as stagnation of lymph contributes to acne.

And lymphatic drainage reduces puffiness, thanks to its ability to disburse congestion, which may have been caused by irritants, cosmetics, illness, allergies, or overindulgence of inflammatory foods. It also has a positive impact on rosacea, and fine lines, leaving the skin brighter.

Advocates of lymphatic drainage massage report that in addition to skin enhancement, the technique is also effective for pain relief, hormonal imbalances, cellulite, allergies and headaches, among other issues.

Additionally, the technique can also be used to clear the remnants of anesthesia from the body following surgery, and help reduce swelling after medical procedures, particularly cosmetic surgery.

Men and women alike are including lymphatic drainage massages as a regular part of their wellness routines.

As professional Aestheticians here at Changes Spa & Aesthetics we are trained in this special technique and offer lymphatic drainage massage in both facials and massages. Consider trying one! Like any massage, your body will surely thank you.

Save Your Neck

Save Your Neck

Are you “thin skinned?”

The answer – no matter who you are – is a resounding, yes.

But so is everyone.

While we may not all be thin skinned in the negative sense of the term – as in being emotionally overly sensitive – all of us are literally thin skinned in certain areas of our body. These sensitive skin areas include our necks, eyes, hands and décolleté, or upper chest area.

Your Face Might Need a Good Workout!

Your Face Might Need a Good Workout!

Feeling a bit down in the mouth lately? Well, we’ve got an app for that.

Looking a tad marionette-like in the chin area? Good news: we’ve got an app for that too.

Or maybe your frown is becoming more prominent? Lucky you; we’ve got an app for that as well.

The app? It is the microcurrent cosmetic system for facial sculpting: a treatment using wands that emit a gentle microcurrent that when applied to the face, rehabilitates and firms facial muscles.

Sugar Shock!

Sugar Shock!

Oh, that sweet tooth !  When the craving hits, it’s all but impossible to resist a sugary treat.

But as we know, that bite of a tasty donut has a way of biting us back in negative ways. Weight gain, increased cholesterol levels, liver damage, and resistance to insulin are just a few of the ways sugars like high-fructose corn syrup, cane sugar or juice, maltose and dextrose – added sugars with no purpose other than to increase flavors – can wreak havoc on our internal systems.

These sugars can also inflict damage to our external body as well, by aging our skin. Yes, we are talking about wrinkles – additional creases and furrows created by overindulgence of unnatural sugars. Ouch!

“Your face is going to freeze like that!”
Remember that warning from our moms? They would use the phrase to try and cajole us out of frowning, pouting or sneering at the veggies on our plates at dinner.
Oh, if only! If only our faces could have been frozen back in time when we had no laugh lines or crow’s feet.

“I definitely want the recipe for this!”

“What’s in the punch? It’s amazing!”

“Oh, boy…. there goes my diet!”

Yes, it’s that time of year alright: the holiday season. The time of year when we over indulge our taste buds starting with Thanksgiving and continuing until the clock strikes midnight ushering in the New Year. And even beyond that!

Do Your Skin a Favor and Eat Your Veggies!

Do Your Skin a Favor and Eat Your Veggies!

You are what you eat! So true; but the axiom is not just about the ‘shape’ your body is in. It also refers to your skin, which reflects what you eat as well.

While much of the focus on healthy eating is on body benefits, we can’t forget that our skin needs to be fed healthy too. Indeed, the emphasis on wellness through plant-based nutrition, for example, is especially advantageous for our skin.
